What Comes After Survival?

Survival is often treated as the ending of the story. Lori’s experience asks what happens after the immediate danger passes and everyone expects life to become normal again.
The body may be safe while the mind remains alert. Relationships may have changed. Identity may feel unfamiliar. Gratitude for being alive can coexist with anger, fear, exhaustion, and grief.
Recovery includes practical choices that rarely look inspirational: accepting care, rebuilding routines, tolerating uncertainty, and deciding again and again to participate in life.
People who show up during crisis can become family through action rather than history. Care creates bonds because it meets a person in the place where performance is no longer possible.
Survival gives you more time. Healing is the slower work of deciding what that time will mean and allowing the next life to be different from the one that ended.
