Before Asking Why They Don’t Leave

“Do better” is easy advice from outside an impossible circumstance. Matt’s story asks us to examine the barriers hidden inside that sentence.

People may remain in harmful situations because leaving can threaten housing, money, children, safety, identity, or the only community they know. Fear is not always irrational; sometimes it is an accurate reading of the available choices.

Chronic stress changes decision-making. When every day is organized around survival, long-term planning becomes harder and the next immediate threat receives all available attention.

Support begins with curiosity rather than judgment. What resources are missing? What risk would leaving create? What would make one safer choice genuinely possible?

Accountability still matters, but compassion makes accountability useful. Change becomes more likely when a person is given a path—not merely told from a distance that they should find one.
